Overruled

Boom!

The slug shattered tile and left a hole in the once pristine floor.

Before I could fire again, the Sweetwater had his fingers around Maria's stolen ember.

"Your sacrifice was not in vain." He crushed the fiery spark and with it sent out a shock wave of angry energy. It was like stepping into traffic only to get blasted by the first passing semi. I had the distinct impression of going airborne, then the hard stop when Maria’s glass door shattered against my back.

"Ugh..."

"Don't do it, Peter. She's still there."

That was James’ voice, even in my addled state, it was impossible to lose the compassion in his words.

"It's too late. It is already done. May the Light have mercy on her tortured soul."

I pushed myself up only to find James reaching for me. The tar in my chest surged. It wasn't used to getting pushed. It was used to doing the pushing, and it was ready to do as much with extreme prejudice.

"A Pelvim is coming. We need to move!"

I turned James away and stood on my own, the tar popping bits of glass from my skin. "No."

Peter stood inside the shattered door, his face just as smug as I remembered it. "Good. I'd rather keep it all in one place. It would be a pain to clean your tar trail."

I had no idea where the gun was, but it didn't matter, the darkness had plenty of ideas. Visions of broken bones and smashed faces filled my mind, a Peter lying face down in an ever-expanding pool of boiling death.

"I am the Eternal Shame."

"Listen to her, James. Listen to your Anders Hand. She is lost. She has fallen and there is no coming back, not from that."

"There is still a spark in her. We have to drop all we are doing in search of that lost sheep."

I tuned out the rest of their words. They'd descended into some confusing mixture of archaic scripture and mind-numbing platitudes. The tar had no use for either. It only had eyes for one thing, Peter's death.

I lunged, but never reached that smug jerk.

Wide wings filled the space between us, wings attached to the muscular body of an amazonian-looking powerhouse. Bright armor surrounded a female body that rippled with fire and fury.

"The Pelvim!" James shouted.

"Huh?" The tar pushed my confusion away. We would tear through this thing and reach Peter just the same.

I took a step closer, only to have the woman retrieve a fiery sword from her waist.

For the first time since it had been freed, the darkness hesitated.

"Cut her down!" Peter cried from somewhere behind the monstrous woman. "Cut down the Eternal Shame and revel in the blood of your ancient enemy."

His command was enough to snap the tar out of its hesitation.

The gun!

I found it in the broken glass and lunged for it, but the woman was quicker than I anticipated. No sooner did I get a hand on the weapon, than the fiery sword sliced a line through my side.

James tried to get to me, but the Pelvim blocked his path.
